Germany's Bavarian State Philharmonic Returns Home for the Holidays

World-renowned symphony orchestra's New Year's Eve concert crowns medieval city's Christmas Markets and Nativity Trail celebrations and highlights busy international tour

Each year during the holiday season, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra (Bamberger Symphoniker), otherwise known as the Bavarian State Philharmonic Orchestra (Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie), enhances the Old World charm of the medieval city of Bamberg, Germany.

On New Year’s Eve, the orchestra returns to its own Concert and Congress Hall (Konzert und Kongresshalle) on the Regnitz River, and presents its special holiday concert at the hall, known locally as “Symphony on the Regnitz.” Music lovers can enjoy several Christmastime concerts in Bamberg and the surrounding area, but the most coveted of the holiday concerts is the traditional New Year’s Eve concert (Silvesterkonzert). The orchestra’s holiday schedule coincides with Bamberg’s renowned Christmas Markets (Weihnachtsmarkte) and seasonal Nativity Trail (Krippenweg).

Classical, Romantic and Contemporary Music Worldwide

The orchestra holds the distinction of Bavaria’s Cultural Ambassadors and books a full annual schedule of about 50 concerts worldwide. Their repertoire emphasizes contemporary music as well as classical and romantic works. In addition to entertaining in the local area, audiences worldwide on enjoy their concerts. In 2009, the musicians toured England, Japan, Spain, Luxembourg and many dates in their home country of Germany. In addition, the symphony also provided scores from the orchestra pit for a Haydn opera during Bamberg’s 2009 Summer Nights Festival in June and July.

Conductor Jonathan Nott

The distinguished Englishman Jonathan Nott has led the symphony as conductor since 2000, garnering respect for his affinity for and devotion to contemporary music. He has directed the philharmonic to successes in festivals such as those in Salzburg, Edinburgh, Beijing, London, Lucerne, St. Petersburg, and New York. Under Nott, the orchestra achieved the rank of Bavarian State Orchestra (Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie) in 2003.

Symphony Orchestra Tickets

Ticket prices for the New Year’s Eve concert start at 35 Euros, around $55 USD. Regular season ticket prices start at 43 Euros, and concertgoers can purchase packages of tickets at various price points.
