Lack of competition and the absence of low-cost airlines mean low airfares and cheap tickets are rare on scheduled flights to Strasbourg Airport (SXB) in Alsace, France.
Strasbourg Airport (Aéroport de Strasbourg Entzheim – SXB) is around 10 km to the southwest of Strasbourg. It is the seventh busiest airport in France but the number of destinations served by regular airlines is surprisingly limited.
Low-cost airlines are a rare sight at Strasbourg Airport making true bargain basement tickets hard to find. Lack of competition on all routes also does not help. Local residents have a choice of cheap tickets on many charter flights flying especially in summer to Mediterranean holiday destinations.
French national carrier Air France (AF) has the largest number of flights to Strasbourg Airport. However, the majority of these flights are operated by regional carriers on behalf of Air France.
Several other airlines have direct flights to Strasbourg Airport (SXB). However, the lack of low-cost airlines and competition on routes helps to keep airfares high.
Strasbourg Airport is just 10 km southwest of Strasbourg and easily reached on public transportation. There are two options – by tram and bus or by train.
From downtown Strasbourg, take tram 2 in the direction of Illkirch / Lixenbuhl and get off at station Baggersee. From here, it is a 12-minute shuttle bus ride to Strasbourg Airport. The tram and buses operate at least twice per hour from around 6 am to 10 pm.
From Strasbourg, take the train to Entzheim station from where it is a five-minute walk to the airport. (Entzheim station will be moved right next to the airport by 2009.) The train ride is only between 8 and 15 minutes long but there are huge gaps in the timetable, especially on weekends.
Strasbourg Airport can be reached by car from downtown in 15 minutes. From Colmar, it takes around 40 minutes and just over an hour from Mulhouse. From highway A35, use exit 8 (Entzheim Aéroport).
Alternative transportation options to Strasbourg, France include trains and using other airports. High-speed trains from France (TGV) and Germany (ICE) allow for fast connections to other cities with Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) the fastest and easiest to reach airport with intercontinental connections. German airports Karlsruhe Baden-Baden / Baden Airpark (FKB) and Saarbrücken (SCN) are used by low-cost airlines and are alternatives to Strasbourg for travelers using rental cars.
