Friedrichroda is an attractive little town in the Thuringer Wald region of Germany. Of particular interest are the mineral waters.

The Thuringer forest is an archetypal German Forest of dense evergreens, and the little resort of Friedrichroda is a good stop for refreshment.

Signposted from the main road the spring car park is shared with the local sports facilities, which initially presents and uninviting 1960s concrete façade for the road. Fortunately this belongs to the sports facilities and municipal swimming pool – the springs are a couple of hundred metres further on, set in a pleasant little park with attractive views.

As well as its noted mineral waters, Friedrichroda is known for its particularly pure air “LuftKurort” – which is good for people suffering from breathing ailments. The clear air is partially from the distance away from industrial centres, the purifying effect of the extensive forests of the Thuringer Wald. The elevation of the area also helps keep the air clean of low-lying pollutants.

Facilities

The compact town centre offers a range of coffee shops, bars and restaurants, and the usual baker selling excellent German bread. The tourist information centre is located in the pedestrianised part of the town centre, most of the information is in German only. They can give you details of some of the local attractions – the fabulous crystal caverns of the Marienglashohle are nearby. This is a few km away by car, but for the visitor without a car there are some attractive alternatives. The horse and cart goes to the caves from the town centre if there is time to spare, or for a quicker journey there is the Thuringer Waldbahn tram line, which begins in Gotha and ends at Tabarz, passing through some gorgeous scenery, There are tram stops at both Friedrichroda and the Marienglashohle.

Spring Water Composition

The spring water contains

Sodium – 123 mg/l

Magnesium – 96 mg/l

Calcium – 256 mg/l

Fluoride – 1.4 mg/l

Chloride – 225 mg/l

Sulphate – 770 mg/l

Dry residue 1661 mg/l

The local people seem to bring containers along and fill them up at the municipal springs – the water is clearly popular in the area. On the glass surround of the springs there is a list of ailments that the waters are reputed to help with and quite precise instructions on how to make the best use of it. Amongst these are tooth decay, gallstones, diabetes and pancreatic ailments. Oddly enough, the water appears to have a very faintly sweet taste to it, like soft water, despite the high concentration of dissolved minerals.
