Concerts (Schlosskonzerte) are held each September in the Sängersaal of Bavaria's romantic, Disney-like Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau near Füssen, Germany.

Schloss Neuschwanstein’s Sängersaal

The largest hall in Schloss Neuschwanstein is the Sängersaal (Singers’ Hall) – a reception room with excellent acoustics. This hall is a smaller version of the famous Sängersaal in the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach in Thuringia, Central Germany.

According to a legend, on which Richard Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf der Wartburg is based, troubadours once held a singing competition here in the Wartburg. In 1867, Bavarian King Ludwig II (1864-1886) saw that hall during a visit to the Wartburg and simply had to have something similar in Neuschwanstein Castle.

The Sängersaal in Schloss Neuschwanstein is decorated with lavish frescoes of scenes from Wagner’s opera Parzival (Parsifal). Scenes from Tannhäuser and other Wagner operas feature prominently throughout the castle.

Although the Sängersaal is eminently suitable for lavish parties, it was never actually used during King Ludwig’s lifetime. The first concerts here were only held six decades after the king’s death.

The Schlosskonzerte (Castle Concerts) in Schloss Neuschwanstein

Annually, in mid-September, a series of evening concerts are held in the Sängersaal in Schloss Neuschwanstein. The program is different every night and changes annually but Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven generally features strongly with music by Richard Wagner forming the highlight of the series.

The concerts are hugely popular with the number of tickets limited and not easy to obtain. Ticket sales start early February on a day announced several months in advance – usually the first Monday in February.

On the first day of sales, tickets can be bought as follows:

  • In person – queuing officially starts around 6 am (sales at 7:30 am) – from the Kurhaus Schwangau, Gipsmühlweg 5; or
  • By telephone – 08362/8198-41 – from 1:30 pm.

Tickets left over after the first day are sold in person, via phone, fax, in writing, or email. Email requests can be sent at any time but are only considered on the second day if tickets remained unsold.

Tickets include admission to the concerts, car parking if required, a program, and free bus transfers from the parking area to the castle itself. A bus service is also available in each direction from Füssen and Schwangau towns.

  • Elegant dress is preferred.

From the entrance of Schloss Neuschwanstein to the concert hall inside the castle requires at least ten minutes and involves five flights of stairs. Be on time - admission to the castle and concert hall is not allowed at all after the concerts have started.
