The beach bistro La Grand Plage has it all: nice food, great view, a big beach right at its doorstep - and even a sauna!

With its magnificent coastline, 25 miles of golden sand facing west to the North Sea, visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a nice spot for a drink or dinner on Sylt's beach or in the dunes. But while most restaurants sit on the cliffs or in the dunes, La Grand Plage made it right onto the beach.

Choose Sauna or Sundowner at La Grand Plage

Looking at this charming beach restaurant on wooden stilts situated between the sea and the wavy dunes might remind of Long Island or the Hamptons. Just north of posh Kampen the French named restaurant sits majestically on the big beach its name refers to – it is one of the most romantic spots to watch the sun set over the North Sea.

While indoors the building is relatively small and a cosy retreat for beach walkers caught in a shower of rain, the main attraction is its spacious porch, several metres over beach level. Here local sea food can be enjoyed as well as a choice of North Frisian and international cuisine in good quality and for a reasonable price. Local specialities include salt marsh lamb and Sylt oysters.

The most original feature of La Grand Plage certainly is the beach sauna – not uncommon on Sylt, but only here combined with a restaurant. Of course, one can be visited without the other, but thirsty visitors heading for a cup of coffee or a beer should not be too surprised to see people running towards the sea in the nude to cool off.

How to Get There

Coming by car from Westerland drive through Kampen and take the last turn to the left within the village. You end up at a parking lot close to Restaurant Sturmhaube. From here you can already see the wooden restaurant La Grand Plage on the beach, which is also signposted. The last bus-stop in Kampen is also within easy walking distance.

To work up an appetite La Grand Plage can be approached via the beach, of course. Walking all the way from Westerland is quite a walk through the sand though – more than 5 kilometers, about 3.5 miles.

More about Sylt: To escape the breeze on a windy day, visit Kupferkanne in Kampen, which is a lovely café on the east coast, overlooking the wadden sea towards the Danish coastline - plus general information on the island of Sylt and how to enjoy beach life on Sylt.
