Sylt, off the coast of Germany and Denmark, is a top spot to wine and dine in style. Gourmet beach restaurant Sansibar even has an impressive wine cellar in the dunes.

Sylt has a 25 mile long coastline of beach exposed to the North Sea waves on the west, and some more sheltered and more quiet spots on it's east coast, facing the German-Danish coast and the tidal mudflats of the unique wadden sea. So by visiting one the many restaurants that sit directly in the dunes or on the beach, visitors can make the most of their stay on this popular island. The most famous restaurant of Sylt greets visitors with a pirate flag and sits in the dunes and directly on the west coast beach on the southern half of Sylt.

Top Wines at Sansibar

Humble looking from the outside, Sansibar is a pleasant surprise, when it comes to food: The restaurant amidst dunes convinces with fresh seafood with an innovative finish, which can be enjoyed either inside or outside - with the feet in the sand, on rustic benches and in the wicker beach chairs called Strandkorb.

The wine cellar is famous for its abundance of high quality wines – more than 60000 bottles from over 1200 vineyards. Exclusive wine tastings from renowned wineries like Mouton Rothschild frequently take place in this unique location under the dunes and close to the North Sea waves.

Most of the guests come to enjoy the scenery, though, and to have lunch or coffee, a glass of champagne or a beer. On a sunny day it gets very busy here. While the service is sometimes a bit all over the place, this gives guests only more time to see and be seen. Also being popular as a casual hangout for German celebrities, Sansibar markets itself exhaustively – people in pastel pirate t-shirts and hoodies can be seen all over the island!

How to Get there

Go south on the main road towards Hörnum, which is the southern tip of the island. If by car you'll see Sansibar after about 10 minutes, signposted on the right hand side at a big parking lot – it is easy to recognize by a big black pirate flag. It is within a nice distance for cycling, and there is also a bus-stop right at the parking lot. Cyclists can hitch a ride, if they don't want to face the North Sea winds on their way home, or if they investigated too much the delights of the wine cellar.
