A major transport hub on the German rail network, Koln Hauptbahnhof makes the biggest city in NordRhein-Westfalen accessible to Bremen, Hanover & Essen.
Archetypal transport hub: Cologne in Germany
If ever there was an archetypal transport hub, it would be Cologne in Germany. The nearby airport is a major landing spot for budget airlines offering cheap flights all across Europe, while it is a major destination on the German rail network. Cologne Station (or Koln hauptbahnhof for those in Germany, looking at a printed or online timetable and feeling a little bit confused) is very busy indeed.
Biggest city in the federal state of NordRhein Westfalen
But it would be a huge mistake to think of Cologne as somewhere just to pass through on the train. With a population of just under one million, Cologne is the biggest city in the federal state of NordRhien-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia), and it is regarded as Germany’s media capital. Highlights include taking a cable car across the river Rhine, the absolutely enormous Gothic cathedral and on a more esoteric level, the world biggest record store… The local branch of the Saturn chain is absolutely humungous.
Three Wise Men pilgrimage site
The huge cathedral also contains a fairly important religious relic. Inside is a gold sarcophagus that allegedly contains the bones of the Magi (better known to the rest of us as the three wise men or three kings from the Orient). More to the point, the cathedral is right outside the station.
