Trains are the easiest and fastest way to get to Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), Germany from the downtown Hauptbahnhof and Ruhr cities Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen, and Cologne.

Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is around 10 km northwest of Düsseldorf, the capital of the German federal state North Rhine-Westphalia. Although Düsseldorf has less than 600,000 inhabitants, the larger Ruhr area has more than 10 million.

Düsseldorf Airport thus serves as primary airport for numerous Ruhr cities including Essen, Duisburg, and Dortmund. Travelers to Cologne (Köln) may also prefer Düsseldorf to Frankfurt Airport for long-distance flights – for short-haul, European flights Cologne-Bonn Airport is unrivaled in the region.

Ground transportation to Düsseldorf Airport is easy with numerous options available to travelers.

By Train to Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)

Trains are the most convenient public transportation option to Düsseldorf Airport. Around 350 trains per day stop at the airport with direct connections to many cities in addition to Düsseldorf itself.

Düsseldorf Airport has two train stations:

  • Bahnhof Düsseldorf Flughafen (Düsseldorf Airport Station)

Most trains, including long-distance Inter-City Express trains and local trains including some S-Bahn trains, stop at Bahnhof Düsseldorf Flughafen. Around 60 trains per day arrive from Cologne and 120 from Duisburg – even more arrive from Düsseldorf itself.

The SkyTrain connects Bahnhof Düsseldorf Flughafen railway station with the airport terminal building. The SkyTrain is a fully automated monorail that covers the 2.5 km (1.6 miles) from the railway station to Düsseldorf Airport terminal building in less than 7 minutes. The SkyTrain runs every 3.5 to 7 minutes.

Bahnhof Düsseldorf Flughafen is on the main line from Düsseldorf to Duisburg. Direct trains are available from Düsseldorf Airport to numerous cities including Düsseldorf (7 minutes), Cologne (Köln) (40 min), Bonn (65 min), Koblenz (2 hours), Berlin (4 hours), Duisburg (8 min), Essen (25 min), Dortmund (60 min), and Aachen (100 min). Further connections are available to all parts of Germany (and most of Europe) via Düsseldorf or Cologne (Köln) Hauptbahnhof.

  • Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal (Düsseldorf Airport Terminal Station)

Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal station is even more convenient – it is in the basement of the airport’s terminal C building. However, only trains of the S-Bahn line S7 stops here. S7 goes from the airport to Solingen via Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof generally twice per hour in 12 minutes and is more convenient than other trains for travelers from Düsseldorf’s main station.

By Road to Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)

Düsseldorf Airport is easily reached by road. It is on Autobahn A44, exit 31. Travel time from downtown Düsseldorf can be as short as 10 minutes. Taxis to central Düsseldorf (Old Town or Hauptbahnhof area) is around €16, to Duisburg €30, and to Essen €40.

Bus services are available from the airport but are generally not convenient for most international travelers. However, while major conferences and exhibitions (Messe) are held at Düsseldorf or Essen, direct bus services are available from the airport to the respective exhibition grounds.
