Getting to Munich Airport (MUC) in Germany from downtown München Hauptbahnhof is easy on S-Bahn trains and buses. Taxis and airport shuttles run to other Bavarian towns.

Munich Airport was specifically built some distance to the north of Munich in a sparsely populated area to allow for more flights and less hindrance to local residents. As a result, getting to Munich Airport takes longer than the 10 to 15 minutes travelers need from other German cities such as Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Berlin to the local airports.

Both trains and buses take around 45 minutes from downtown Munich to the airport but trains are obviously not influenced by traffic jams. Direct buses and transfer services are available to many other towns but often it is necessary to connect in Munich itself.

By Train from Munich Airport to Downtown München Hauptbahnhof

  • S-Bahn Commuter Trains

S-Bahn commuter trains S1 and S8 run from München Flughafen (Munich Airport) to Munich downtown. These trains generally run every 20 minutes meaning in effect a train to downtown stations every ten minutes. The cost is €8.80 (US$13) one-way.

From the airport, S1 goes to the Ostbahnhof (53 minutes) with stops amongst others at the Hautpbahnhof (45 minutes) and Marienplatz (48 minutes). S8 goes to Passing (50 minutes) and stops en route at the Ostbahnhof (33 minutes), Marienplatz (38 minutes), and Hauptbahnhof (41 minutes).

  • When taking S1 to the airport, use only the wagons towards the rear of the train. The train splits at Neufahrn with the front part continuing to Freising while the rear section goes to the airport.
  • German Railways Trains (Deutsche Bahn)

Currently, long-distance German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) trains do not run to the airport. For most long-distance connections, it is necessary to change at the Hauptbahnhof. Many long-distance trains also stop at Passing in the east of Munich allowing changes here rather than at the Hauptbahnhof.

It is also possible to use the bus service to Freising for local train connections to Regensburg, Nürnberg, Passau, and Bamberg. Using Freising can save time and it allows for the use of the Bayern Ticket, which may only be used on local Bavarian trains.

  • Future Plans

New railway lines will connect the airport with Erdingen and Freissing and thereby facilitate travel on local trains, especially towards Ostbayern (Eastern Bavaria).

However, the big dream is the Transrapid MAGLEV-train (Magnetic Levitation) that could cut the travel time between the airport and downtown Munich to just 10 minutes. It may be operational by 2014 but arguments over its financing and environmental impact will almost certainly delay its construction.

By Car to Munich Airport (MUC)

Munich Airport is easily reached by car. The airport is on Autobahn A92, which connects Autobahn A9 (Munich to Nürnberg) and Deggendorf on the Danube. Use exit 6, Flughafen München.

Traveling time from Munich can be as little as 40 minutes but depends on traffic. Taxis cost around €50 (US$ 75). Taxis to Freising take around 15 minutes (€18 / US$22).

By Bus to Munich Airport (MUC)

Buses provide an alternative to Munich Airport from both downtown Munich and other Bavarian towns.

  • Buses from Munich

The Lufthansa Airport Bus provides a bus service up to three times per hour from the Airport to München-Nord (25 minutes) and the Hauptbahnhof (40 minutes). The one-way fare is €10 (US$15) while a return at €16 (US$24) is cheaper than using the S-Bahn. München-Nord offers connections to U-Bahn U6, stop Nordfriedhof.

  • The Lufthansa Airport Bus may be used independently from flights.

Buses are available from the airport directly to the Messegelände (Show Grounds) when major shows are in progress. The journey takes around 45 minutes.

  • Buses from other Bavarian Towns

Scheduled bus services are available directly to some towns in Bavaria to avoid transiting via Munich itself. Two bus services that may be of use to foreign tourists are:

  • MVV Bus 635 runs three times per hour to Freissing in 15 minutes. Freising has useful regional train connections to Regensburg, Passau, and Landshut.
  • The Ingolstädter Express Bus X109 connects the airport in an hour up to 13 times per day with Ingolstadt, the home of Audi.

Transfer services are available to most towns in Bavaria as well as many in Austria. These transfer services only run on demand and thus need to be reserved in advance.
